Professors with real-world experience provide their students with the most accurate insights into what awaits them in the professional world. Embracing this philosophy is one of the reasons students find their sports business education at Temple University beneficial.

John Allgood is the Academic Director of the Executive Master of Science in Sport Business and Assistant Professor at Temple University. Allgood’s extensive professional history within the sport industry has provided him with the comprehensive knowledge he now shares with mid-career professionals and students seeking to enter the industry.

“As a result of working in the industry, I’m able to connect and mentor these high-level executives that are going through the program because I understand some of the things that they are going through at work,” Allgood says.

Allgood’s career began in the mid-1990s in Triple-A baseball at Oklahoma City. Eventually, the organization, and Allgood’s role, expanded to run an AHL hockey franchise and a USL soccer team, while also hosting high profile concerts.

Working for a minor league operation can be one of the most taxing but educational experiences a sports professional can go through. At the age of 35, Allgood won the Pacific Coast League’s Executive of the Year Award, making him the youngest winner of the award at that time. In all, Allgood spent the better part of two decades in minor league sports.

Drawing on his varied experience, Allgood taught at the University of Oklahoma for 13 years before making the switch to education full-time, a move that coincided with the realization the second half of his career would be dedicated to mentoring sport business leaders.

“I was gaining all this experience and teaching at the same time,” Allgood remembers. “And then in 2015, I sat down and mapped out what I call the second half of my career. I wanted to push the discourse—I wanted to write, do podcasts, and speak about sports business. I love teaching and serving students and it just seemed like the natural next step. I have a real passion for helping students achieve their dreams.”

Allgood joined the staff at Temple in 2017. The rest of the staff within the program bring similar real-world experience into the classroom, which is the true value of the Executive Master of Science in Sport Business, Allgood said.

“We don’t have adjunct professors in the executive program. They’re all full-time professors and they all have experience working in the industry or they work on projects with industry leaders,” Allgood says of the educators within Temple’s program.

“The second benefit is the rigor. When I’m talking to people about our program, I tell them, this is not a piece of paper. You’re not just getting a master’s degree. You’re going to have to work hard to get through this program. In the end, when you graduate, you feel like you achieved something.”

Students within the program are professionals working both within and outside the sports industry including high-level executives from ESPN, SportsNet, professional teams and college athletic departments. Others work as bankers, attorneys and other roles preparing to make a transition into the business of sports.

Through Temple’s hands on-curriculum, Allgood has the opportunity to build relationships with students. Because of his dedication to students and passing on his practical experience, the program will continue to provide value to students for years to come.

“The most rewarding thing for me is to see students achieve their dream of completing a master’s degree. These are very talented, smart people from all over the country and now they have a connection that will continue to grow not only professionally, but personally as well.”
